this is just the beginning

this is just the beginning

well, this is the new polowick.com site. it has my favourite pieces of design for viewing. as well as a collection of my favourite photographs, and a link to my photoblog. this is the 182th image i’ve posted consecutively, even over christmas and other holidays (and my birthday!). 8 days from now i’ll be taking a trek across the states with my band which will leave me unable to post images every day. it was fun while it lasted and my photographs have become a little strained.

time constraints and the being uninspired (at least photographically) have left me stretching back into my archiving and posting photos i wouldn’t normally post, and post-process the way i shouldn’t. from now on i’ll try and update this photoblog when i can…it could be every week, every two weeks, or if this summer leaves me inspired again, it could possibly become a daily photoblog again. thank you to all of those who have taken the time to visit my site every day and another thanks to those who took the time to email me or comment. thanks!

flowers and all that

flowers and all that

i was going to try and refrain from posting cheesy images…but i took these and they’re not THAT bad…sorry about that though! hope some of you can find some enjoyment in this

as i get ready for the new version of this site, i have been taking photos of my design work. so heres a shot taken looking down on my white kitchen table. book is kindly held by my roomate shane. shot with my 50mm 1.4, standing on top of the table, with a 430ex flash bounced to the right off a white wall.

for those who are interested in what this is, it is a school assignment where we were required to chose a typeface we admired and make a small book on it. this is page 4 where i laid out all the major characters contained in the font…

infrared: trees and all that

infrared: trees and all that

another infrared shot i took last week. what i found was odd, is when I shoot infrared in JPGs they come out green in colour. When I shoot in raw they come out purple like this. who knew!

and shadows

and shadows

just a shot experimenting with shallow depth of field and some unusual shadows. i apologize for the lack of original photos lately. i’m in the final two weeks of school until i depart into america with my band for tour. i’ll be stopping daily posts on may 5th until later may, but i’ll make sure to post lots of images to make up for it. thanks for looking!

blur

blur

a few days ago i tried something new. i placed some flowers in the sunshine by a window and spent a good 30 minutes photographing them intentionally out of focus and at f/1.4. i have a lot of them that i love, so heres one of them.

color infrared: fields

color infrared: fields

another infrared/colour photo combination. it’s not as noticeable as yesterdays because those green colours are more opt to have weird things happening in infrared. again taken with my sony f828, tripod, iso 64 at f2.0 1/30th with nd/ir filters.

kara has been bothering me to put up something a little more original. so i went out yesterday and took some infrared photos and colour photos, and stiched them together in photoshop. taken with my sony f828, hoya infrared filters and a couple ND filters on a tripod, 1/30th exposures, iso 64. i apologize for the long loading times, i just though some would be curious to see the combined image as well as the two untouched images.

shot on the york university campus during sunset on one of the coldest days i have ever experienced in february. i am done with winter!

this world can be beautiful

this world can be beautiful

today is the day we celebrate the sacrifice god made for us. today i put up a panoramic photo i took in 2006 of storm over a lake. showing the beauty of gods work. this is stitched together with 7 images in photoshop, and yes up north does get this bad (and gorgeous) of weather, my post-processing was actually fairly minimal.

waiting on the stairs

waiting on the stairs

another from my series of three-quartre portraits i needed for class. heres michelle waiting on the glass stairs at TEL. lit with window lighting from above and a 430ex flash.

photoshoppin’

photoshoppin'

earlier i posted some spreads of my editorial work. here is a photo i took for an article about how to capture your dreamgirl. i photographed shane in TEL holding a green piece of paper roughly about the size i wanted to photoshop the cutout girl as. what you see is a before and after. the final editorial has text and headlines on the image, which you’ll be able to see…when i finish the design portfolio portion of this site.

minimalism

minimalism

my friend anton needed a photo a cube he made for an article he wrote on minimalism. he is a great designer and it was fun to help set up and photograph what he envisioned.
