disaster series

disaster series

this is a series of 5 shots i had to do for my film class. the idea was to make a fictional documentary story. so my fictional story was this character returning home after a natural disaster had torn through his home. the prints look better in real life, things never look as good scanned as they do first hand.

special thanks to mike sicoli for helping me out with the shots and borrowing his lens.

i upgraded my 50D to a 7D recently and i’ve been experimenting with the wireless flash control which i absolutely love. combined with my 580exii flash and my roomates flash, i can have some pretty decent looking mobile studio shots. it’s a pretty banal shot, so i fiddled around with the colours, but i still love the rim lighting. one flash behind his head, and another bounce off the ceiling on his left. can’t wait to put this feature to a real use.

another shot from my film class. i made the mistake of purchasing slide film instead of normal negative film (c-41). basically slide film is meant to be processed to not come out as a negative, but ready for light to enlarge it in positive form. my teacher said it was a great mistake as i could cross-process the film – essentially develop the slide film in the same way negative film is developed. it has no colour base so the colours come out extremely saturated and a little off. i used some colour-filtration in the darkroom to turn the image completely green.

i’ve been shooting a lot mainly in film for class, which is partially why i haven’t updated this in a bit. this was one shot in an assignment, my brother in the fields, shot to satisfy the “portrait” assignment. i’ll have some more film shots up soon. taken with a canon rebel, kodak 36 vivid colour roll of film, 50mm 1.4 wide open.
