i’ve been shooting a little bit, nothing too interesting. nothing too motivating (with my current gear setup anyways). then a gorgeous sunset comes like this. i shot this off my front porch and stiched together a number of shots to make this panaroma. its a 120 megapixel shot so if anyone wants to pay big bucks to have it enlarged on canvas, let me know! also, i realize at this width, the photo is a little small so i put a larger version here if you want to check it out.

ps firefox (or any browser for that matter) butchers this, oh well.

heres a shot from the inside of the abandoned house, looking out of a broken window into a field. this was one of the first areas that drew my interest. the lighting was spectacular but unfortunately our cameras can’t see as much as our eyes. i had to use a tripod and do some bracketing to get good exposures for the inside and out and combine them.

the glen

the glen

on saturday i went for a hike/photo outing with a few friends in the niagara region. it was quite the hike to get down to this place, though ive gone here with mike sicoli before…it was only in the winter. this place was much different in the summer, water levels very low that provided access to places i haven’t been before.

i was shooting a retirement party the other day and i was testing out exposure settings in the banquet room against the window lighting. here was a test shot that ended up obviously too dark (trying out spot metering, but ended up just using exposure bias by a couple stops). i still like the shot though, you can see a marina with a bunch of boats in the background as well.

maybe i just love banal photographs…or maybe i just love the concentration on composition, color, depth, and texture when there is nothing else interesting to dazzle our eyes with.

this is the same waterfall but taken from above. it was a pretty far drop, by my 80mmm (equiv) lens makes it look tiny. i’m not very happy with the composition, editing, or the colours of this photo. but i think the effect the gathering water at the bottom of the waterfall is too neat not to post. 30 second exposure with a tripod at f16, 2 neutral density filters (hoya nd8 and nd4), iso 100.

me and mike went out shooting again the other day. trying to find some new parks to shoot at, found this little place on ridge road in grimsby. had to do some intensive (and fun) climbing to get to the best waterfalls. 30 second exposure at f8, iso 100, using a tripod and a couple ND filters to make the scene dark enough for silky smooth exposures.

the definition of touring

the definition of touring

van broke down in arkansas during a severe thunderstorm. a tornado passed through that area the day before so we drove the van that was overheating to the max a couple miles down the road until we weren’t under the low clouds that were dark and slightly swirling. this is the van that we took to 4 mechanics…too many breakdowns.

and in the worst of situations comes some great tourist photos. recently i went on a tour with my band throughout the US. the tour was cut in half due to van problems (we saw 4 mechanics and many more breakdowns). when we first broke down in baltimore, maryland we missed our first show but instead gained an opportunity to drive to washington DC and walk around…we even saw barack obama leave the whitehouse (we think).

this is just the beginning

this is just the beginning

well, this is the new polowick.com site. it has my favourite pieces of design for viewing. as well as a collection of my favourite photographs, and a link to my photoblog. this is the 182th image i’ve posted consecutively, even over christmas and other holidays (and my birthday!). 8 days from now i’ll be taking a trek across the states with my band which will leave me unable to post images every day. it was fun while it lasted and my photographs have become a little strained.

time constraints and the being uninspired (at least photographically) have left me stretching back into my archiving and posting photos i wouldn’t normally post, and post-process the way i shouldn’t. from now on i’ll try and update this photoblog when i can…it could be every week, every two weeks, or if this summer leaves me inspired again, it could possibly become a daily photoblog again. thank you to all of those who have taken the time to visit my site every day and another thanks to those who took the time to email me or comment. thanks!
