Die Hard – Custom Movie Opening Titles

Die Hard – Custom Movie Opening from Jared Polowick on Vimeo.

Class assignment to storyboard, film, and edit together a new movie intro for a film we either loved or hated that had no title openings or a terrible one.

I am a big fan of the movie Die Hard. I decided to focus on the struggles John McClane has in the movie with his wife, physical strains, and keeping focused.

Credits:
Actor: W Shane Duquette
Music: Original track from opening sequence of Mr. Brooks, heavily edited to fit this project (feedback, looping, conversations).

Extra props to Payam Rajabi for lending me his 100mm lens, and Michelle Paquette with her 18-55mm lens. I couldn’t have pulled off a lot of shots without that help. Thank you.

Live The Moment - Respect The Tech

Live The Moment is a project for I researched and developed for school. The task was to research the idea of ‘time’ for one semester. This research of time lead me to the fact that people often live their lives through technology – they are truly not living the moment. Who is really doing the living? Is it the camera they are photographing their cherished moments with, the video camera taping the concert they’re at, or the cellphone communicating with their loved ones?

I then began to research the effects of technology and what it is doing to us. I was exposed to the term of Digital Natives. Digital Natives are the first generation to ever be raised entirely in a digital world. According to an article on Macleans.ca, constant access to technology is rewiring this generation’s brains negatively. It claimed technology is replacing the development of social skills, literacy and the will to read, etc. with the development of tech. related skills such as the ability to sort through lots of information quickly. Knowledge is no longer about how much information one can retain mentally, but rather how efficient they are at finding that information through Google.

This led me to analyze my peers and current social situations (as I am included in the oldest age bracket in the digital natives generation) and how I could help relay some awareness to my generation of how truly bionic we have become…and how unnatural it is. This generation requires constant entertainment to pay attention (as our attention spans are shortening), so my solution would have to be extremely engaging to ensure they would remain interested. How could I poke fun at some of the countless situations where technology has negatively entered our social sphere?

bubblegum girl

bubblegum girl

been a long time since i’ve updated this. partly because i’ve been doing a lot more motion work, which always seems to be in production and never really finalizes. wrapping up my last year at university, so i’ll have a ton of new work to post on here. waiting to post some of the grad show portraits i took for our exhibition we’re putting on at the fermenting cellar in toronto.

here’s a shot of michelle i took as a test photo before i took it again using film (my digital camera is my light meter). thanks to payam for the lending of his studio lights.

disaster series

disaster series

this is a series of 5 shots i had to do for my film class. the idea was to make a fictional documentary story. so my fictional story was this character returning home after a natural disaster had torn through his home. the prints look better in real life, things never look as good scanned as they do first hand.

special thanks to mike sicoli for helping me out with the shots and borrowing his lens.

i upgraded my 50D to a 7D recently and i’ve been experimenting with the wireless flash control which i absolutely love. combined with my 580exii flash and my roomates flash, i can have some pretty decent looking mobile studio shots. it’s a pretty banal shot, so i fiddled around with the colours, but i still love the rim lighting. one flash behind his head, and another bounce off the ceiling on his left. can’t wait to put this feature to a real use.

in the fields

i’ve been shooting a lot mainly in film for class, which is partially why i haven’t updated this in a bit. this was one shot in an assignment, my brother in the fields, shot to satisfy the “portrait” assignment. i’ll have some more film shots up soon. taken with a canon rebel, kodak 36 vivid colour roll of film, 50mm 1.4 wide open.

the falls at louth, niagara

the falls at louth, niagara

tuesday night i went out with mike to louth to shoot. we’ve been there before but only in the winter. so much less water and easier access to the upper part of the falls than in winter conditions. this is a 78 image panoramic image that took over half an hour to complete shooting, and days to assemble due to the large file size. add in long computer loading times for even simple processes (levels, etc.) and i have an image that took actual days to capture/edit/process. i’ve been considering making this print on canvas as well, its the largest shot i’ve ever compiled coming in at 1GB in file size and 174.4 megapixels.

on saturday we had a celebration for my grandfather turning 90 years old. i was blessed enough to be able to make it and help him celebrate his long life and good health with friends and family. his age is strictly a number…he is still sharp, he still cuts hair, he still grows vegetables, still cuts the lawn, and is still the life of the party.

decew falls

the other day michelle, jon, alex, and i went to decew falls in st. catharines. it’s really a beautiful area and a fun hike. heres two 8 second exposures with a flash to freeze them at the lower decew falls. i used some neutal density filters as it was the middle of the day. tomorrows photo is the same waterfall but as a panorama.

i was shooting a retirement party the other day and i was testing out exposure settings in the banquet room against the window lighting. here was a test shot that ended up obviously too dark (trying out spot metering, but ended up just using exposure bias by a couple stops). i still like the shot though, you can see a marina with a bunch of boats in the background as well.

earlier i posted some spreads of my editorial work. here is a photo i took for an article about how to capture your dreamgirl. i photographed shane in TEL holding a green piece of paper roughly about the size i wanted to photoshop the cutout girl as. what you see is a before and after. the final editorial has text and headlines on the image, which you’ll be able to see…when i finish the design portfolio portion of this site.

marina

marina

this photo was taken for a photography project. we had a group of 5 (made up of all the good designers in the class, ha!) and then went to 5 differernt locations around the university. each location had one model, one person holding a (home-made) reflector, and a couple of photographers. here’s one shot taken in accolade west of marina luong. this shot used mainly window light, a little bit of lift from the reflector, and a bounced flash. it was a pretty fun experience and i hope to do more like this.

blue eyes

blue eyes

i asked michelle to take a picture of me for an assignment in editorial design. i set up the lights, you can see the huge softbox in my eye. i just thought it was interesting because this is a 100% crop of a face portrait with no editing from my 50mm 1.4 and a canon 50D. too sharp!

i’d also like to wish my michelle a happy birthday!
